To be admitted to the German for Lawyers exam, the students are required to have completed a 4 semester course and acquired three credits.

Course objectives
Students will be able to use indirect speech in German legalese. At the end of the course students will be able to talk about issues of European and International law (e. g. European Union, UNHCR, United Nations, The European Convention on Human Rights). At the end of the course, students will be able to use clear and precise language in order to discuss specific topics. Students will sit a mock test as designed for the Impact project.

Syllabus
  • Topics for reading comprehension, discussion and terminology 1. Indirect speech in German legalese 2. The European Union - ten historic steps, key dates in the history of European integration, a citizens´ Europe 3. The European Union - EU institutions and bodies, regulations, directives and other acts, EU treaties 4. The European Union - the single market, consumer policy 5. The European Union - economic and monetary union, the euro 6. The Council of Europe 7. The United Nations 8. Asylum procedure 9. Labour migration 10.UNHCR 11.European Court for Human Rights, The European Convention on Human Rights 12.Final course Requirements for the exam in German for Lawyers I Written part: 90 minutes (listening, reading, grammar and vocabulary, writing) Oral part: Presentation of a selected court case of your own choice. The presentation must meet the criteria that will be set in the Interactive Syllabus of the course.

Teaching methods
Interactive language seminar, analysis of legal texts, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, independent speaking
Assessment methods
The course is taught in the form of seminars. At the end of the seminar students are required to write a short formal letter. The exam consists of a written and oral part. Students have to pass the written part before they are allowed to take the oral part.
