- Course objectives
- The main aim of the subject is to provide students with sufficient basic knowledge and information about drugs used to treat selected most important diseases that midwives may encounter in clinical practice.
The sub-aims are:
- to familiarize students with general principles of drug effects and drug processing in the organism,
- to introduce several drug groups based on general pharmacological principles. - Learning outcomes
- On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- describe and explain general mechanisms of drug action and their processing in the organism,
- characterize different routes of drug administration,
- describe, what could influence an effect of a drug,
- describe the process of research and development of a new therapeutic agent from the beginning to the entering to the clinical practice,
- classify both therapeutic, and adverse or toxic effects of drugs,
- characterize specific drug groups mentioned in the course syllabus with the emphasis on therapeutic and adverse effect and possible drug interactions. - Syllabus
- 1st lecture: Introduction to Pharmacology. Basic pharmacological concepts. Mechanisms of drug action. Receptors. Overview of drug dosage forms and routes of administration of drugs.

- Teaching methods
- Curriculum offers attendance at lectures read by teacher of pharmacology.
- Assessment methods
- During the studying the students have to prove active knowledge of pharmacology acquired. Students have to pass the exam: final written multiple-choice test (30 questions). In the Final Exam students are asked to answer to multiple-choice questions. Only 1 correct answer is possible to each question. Two points is granted for each correctly answered question. The final evaluation respects the results of test from practicals. The points scored above minimal required value are added to the final score of the exam as follows: Final score = score from exam test + X. The summary of the score obtained is evaluated as follows: mark A = 77-90 points B = 69-76 points C = 64-68 points D = 59-63 points E = 54-58 points F = less than 54 points
