Course objectives
Greek-Latin medical terminology is one of the relevant means for acquisition of the target knowledge of medical students. The tuition is of both theoretic and practical character, conceived as a preparatory course sui generis, introducing the students into the study of medicine by means of its language.
The content of tuition is, like the set of knowledge required in the examination, exclusively determined by the needs of the discipline and medical practice. First of all, it provides such knowledge of Latin and Greek which enables the student to master quickly and purposefully the semantic aspect of terms, their grammatical form, and word-forming structure. At the same time, it provides systematic instruction to independent solution of current terminological problems consisting in understanding of the technical content of the terms and in the formation of medical terms. Furthermore, it opens a view of the wider historical and linguistic fundamentals of medical terminology as well as its general theoretical contexts.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to:
understand and use Latin and Greek-Latin medical terms and expressions correctly;
explain and apply grammatical devices and rules relevant for acquisition of Greek-Latin medical terminology;
recognize the syntactic structure of complex terms;
describe the semantic structure of one-word terms;
form compound words applying the most used word-formation principles;
translate selected expressions from anatomy, pre-clinical and clinical fields of study, medical prescriptions, and pharmacology;
deduce the meaning of unknown terms on the basis of semantic, grammatical and logical relations.
Syllabus
  • BASIC MEDICAL LATIN II - seminar
  • 1st week: Instructions for the course. Revision of substantive and adjective declensions. Latin numerals. Specific features of clinical terminology. Interactive exercises based on authentic medical reports.
  • 2nd week: Latin numerals: objects next to numerals. Introduction to Latin verb conjugation. Terminology related to fractures.
  • 3rd week: Latin verbs (1): infinitive, imperative, present passive subjunctive. Medical prescriptions: terminology prerequisites of professional communication between a doctor and a pharmacist. Factual and formal grammatical structure of a medical prescription. Terms describing various types of wounds and injuries.
  • 4th week: Latin verbs (2): present active and perfect passive participles, gerundive, gerund. Basic vocabulary from pharmacology: subscription, forms of pharmaceutical preparations, pharmaceutical substances. Lexical devices for expressing colour.
  • 5th week: Revision of numerals and verbs. How to interpret and write a medical prescription. Terms describing human appearance and facial expressions.
  • 6th week: Progress test. Word Formation (1): basic rules of derivation. Groups of medicaments. Terms denoting various types of fever.
  • 7th week: Latin prefixes, their meanings and mutual relations. Terms related to heartbeat.
  • 8th week: Latin suffixes (substantival, adjectival). Terms denoting illness and disease.
  • 9th week: Greek prefixes, their meanings and mutual relations. Synonymy, antonymy, polysemy, and homonymy of prefixes. Greek suffixes, polysemy of suffixes. Phrases related to death.
  • 10th week: Word Formation (2): basic rules of composition, combining morphemes. Latin compound words, hybrid words. Latin and Greek equivalents of basic medical terms. Post-mortem diagnosis. Examples of autopsy protocols. Terms denoting inflammations.
  • 11th week: Greek compound words, productive word-forming components. Borrowed words of Latin and Greek origin: sound adaptation and orthography. Terminology of tumors.
  • 12th week: Prefixes, suffixes and compound words: revision. Case history and its components. Terms for various types of surgical procedures.
  • 13th week: Preparatory exercises for the final exam. Exam pre-terms.

Assessment methods
  • Requirements for admission to the final exam:
    1. regular class attendance; one unexcused absence will be tolerated, further absences must be properly excused (via the Study Department of the Faculty of Medicine); in case of more than two absences an adequate substitution can be required to the extent corresponding to the missed lesson); 2. passing the progress test (the limit for passing the test is 75 %). 3. active participation in class, preparation for classes, timely completion of 7 ROPOT applications in IS MUNI (active translation in lessons 8-14 of the compulsory textbook); 4. preparing and giving a presentation. All the information about the above mentioned requirements is explicitly introduced in IS in study materials.
