- The course is only offered to the students of the study fields the course is directly associated with.
The capacity limit for the course is 50 student(s).
Current registration and enrolment status: enrolled: 0/50, only registered: 0/50 - fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- General Medicine (programme LF, M-VL) (2)
- Dentistry (programme LF, M-ZL) (2)
- Course objectives
- To provide students with an overview of the use of medicinal plants in medicine and self-treatment concerning the principles of evidence-based medicine. To enable students to be oriented in the field of medicinal plants in the full scope of pharmacognosy, corresponding ATC groups where medicinal plants are usable. The aim of the course is not, however, to provide information on the home preparation of extracts, saps or even medicines from plant sources but rather to highlight the possible risks arising from combinations with pharmacotherapy and to provide at least a minimum theoretical basis for rational advice to patients by the practitioner.
- Learning outcomes
- Students after completing the course - understand and know the basic classes of active costituents of medicinal plants, and are also familiar with the issues of the legislative topics (drug versus dietary supplement vs. pharmacopoeial herbal drug) - know the basics of plant use in the prevention and treatment of diseases based on EBM (evidence-based medicine) - are able to provide expert advice to the patient about his direct inquiry into the use of medicinal plants in self-treatment - can search and classify professional pharmacological information about medicinal plants and make conclusions applicable in practice - recognize dangerous interactions of medicinal herbs with conventional drugs

- Assessment methods
- Final exam- written form (ROPOT) The students have to prove the active knowledge of pharmacology of medicinal plants. They have to pass the final multiple-choice test to get the credit. They are asked to answer to multiple-choice questions (1 or more correct answers are possible to each question). The test contains 25 questions. One point is granted for each correctly answered question. No point will be distracted for an incorrect answer to the multiple-choice question. The summary of the score obtained is evaluated. A criterion for receiving the credit is the summary score higher or equal to the 50% points of the maximum score obtained, i.e. a minimum of 13 completely correctly answered questions required.
