Course objectives
At the end of the course student should has knowledge that is necessary for understanding of chemical principles applied in further study subjects, especially in biochemistry.He/she understand solution properties and basic physico-chemical laws. Describes the properties of elements and inorganic compounds important for medicine, nutrition and toxicology. Discuses the structure of compounds and reactions taking part in metabolism and organic compounds that have importance in toxicology. Is able to explain chemical principles of structure and function of restorative and auxiliary dental materials.
Syllabus
  • Acid base reactions, basic terms, dissociation of electrolytes, buffers, buffer systems in organism.
  • Energetics of chemical reactions, chemical equilibrium, redox reactions, biochemically important redox reactions.
  • Biologically important elememts and their compounds (selection).
  • Biochemically important reactions of organic compounds (e.g. reactions of alcohols, carboxylic acids, transamination, teh reactions of citric acid cycle).
  • Structure and properties of carbohydrates, polysaccharides, glycoside, nucleosides.
  • Fatty acids, lipids, fosfolipids, glycolipids, steroids, steroidal hormones.
  • restorative and auxiliary stomatological materials- chemial view.
Literature
Teaching methods
Teaching form are lectures. Supplementary subjects are seminars and practicals (VSLC011c and VSLC011c).
Assessment methods
Student must have course-unit credit of seminar in the day of exam.
Examination from Medical chemistry is only written. The test consists from two parts.
The first part is solved on computers in the computer room of Department of Biochemistry: calculations (concentration, pH, buffers, osmotic pressure) – see seminars
simple questions (multiple choice or free answer)
structural formulas (essential organic and inorganic compounds).
The second part is written and is focused on the active knowledge of structural formulas of the most important compounds, expression of important biochemical reactions by chemical equations and the ability to formulate the basic physico-chemical relationships or to draw graphs. For detailed instructions see Study materials - Information about exam.
Language of instruction
Czech
