- Course objectives
- The aim of the subject is to provide students of nutrition therapy programme with sufficient basic knowledge and information about drugs used in the treatment of selected most important diseases. The lectures are focused mainly on general principles of drug effects and drug processing in the organism. Emphasis is put on the aspects that can be reflected in the mutual interaction of food and drugs. Several lectures of special pharmacology follow the general part. Other drug groups are discussed in the following subject in spring semester.
- Learning outcomes
- On completion of the course, the student knows and understands the mechanisms of drug action and their processing in the organism. Student is knowledgeable in routes of drug administration and is able to describe, what could influence the effect of a drug. Student is also able to describe the process of research and development of a new therapeutic from the beginning to the entering to the clinical practice. Student is knowledgeable in both therapeutic, and adverse or toxic effects of drugs. Student si able to characterize specific drug groups mentioned in the course syllabus with the emphasis on therapeutic and adverse effect and possible drug interactions.
- Syllabus
- LECTURE 1: Introduction into the study of Pharmacology, basic terminology. Mechanisms of drug effects. Receptor theory.
- LECTURE 2: Pharmacokinetic processes and important pharmacokinetic parameters.
- LECTURE 3: Factors responsible for variation in drug response.
- LECTURE 4: Adverse drug effects, pharmacovigilance. Drug interactions. General management of poisoning.
- LECTURE 5: Sources, research, and development of new drugs, clinical trials and evaluations.
- LECTURE 6: Pharmacology of allergy. H1-antihistamines. Antiasthmatics.
- LECTURE 7: Pharmacology of GI system II: Pharmacotherapy of peptic ulcer disease. Antiemetics, prokinetic agents.

- Teaching methods
- The curriculum enables attendance at lectures read by teachers of pharmacology. Attendance on the lectures is not obligatory. Self-study for approximately 1 hour per semester is a part of the course. Student uses this time to work on a homework project assessed by the teacher.
- Assessment methods
- There is no testing of knowledge in this part of study as students are expected to continue pharmacological course in the subsequent semester.
