Course objectives
Seminars are complementary to Medical chemistry lecture. The knowledge of general, inorganic, and (bio)organic chemistry, is thoroughly practiced during Medical chemistry seminars. The aim is to obtain knowledge needed for further study of biochemistry and chemistry in the program nutritional therapy.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to understand basics of general, inorganic and organic chemistry to the extent necessary for the further study of biochemistry.
They will be able to apply general physicochemical laws to processes in living organisms.
They will be able to describe the chemical properties of the most important biogenic elements and essential compounds of importance in medicine, nutrition and toxicology. They will be able to describe and discuss the properties and reactions of organic and bioorganic compounds important for the understanding of biochemical processes
Syllabus
  • Mole, molar quantities, solutions, calculations.
  • Test 1. Electrolytes, activity of ions, osmotic pressure, osmolality.
  • Acid-base reactions.
  • Non-covalents interactions, adsorbents, surfactants. Poorly soluble salts, solubility product.
  • Test 2. Kinetics. Chemical equilibrium.
  • Gibbs energy. Redox reactions.
  • Test 3. Organic compounds I.
  • Organic compounds II. Latin names.
  • Organic compounds III.
  • Test 4. Biochemically important heterocyclic compounds.
  • Chemistry of saccharides.
  • Test 5. Lipids and steroids.
  • Amino acids and proteins.
  • Credit test.
Literature
Teaching methods
Class discussion on the base of materials in the seminary textbook. Conditions for giving the course-unit credit: First condition is full attendance in all lessons (or making up all missing and justified lessons). Five short tests are written during the semester. The total number of questions in all tests is 64, each correct answer is counted as one point. Students that will obtain 49 points or more during the semester are not obliged to write the credit test. The other students will write the credit test with the 30 questions in the last week of the semester. The limit for passing the credit test is 14 points. Students that will not fulfill this limit will be allowed to repeat the test once. Remedial dates for writing the credit test will be scheduled. Students that will not fulfill this requirement will not be given the course-unit credit. Obtaining of course-unit credits of practices and seminars is the pre-requisite for registration to the examination of Medical chemistry and for enrollment of Biochemistry in the Spring semester.
