- Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:
1. Describe gamete development, explain principle of meiosis and regulation of gametogenesis.
2. Define the early embryonic development as well as development of fetal membranes, placenta and umbilical cord.
3. Characterize stages of embryonic development, describe the development of individual organ systems of human body.
4. Explain the mechanism of the origin of some developmental anomalies. - Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able to:
1. Describe gamete development, explain principle of meiosis and regulation of gametogenesis.
2. Define the early embryonic development as well as development of fetal membranes, placenta and umbilical cord.
3. Characterize stages of embryonic development, describe the development of individual organ systems of human body.
4. Explain the mechanism of the origin of some developmental anomalies. - Syllabus
- 1. Embryology - definition. The object and the significance of the embryology, its correlation with other branches of medicine. The phases of the human ontogeny. Teratology – critical periods for the origin of congenital anomalies.
- 2. Human gametes - their structure and development, regulation of gametogenesis (ovarian and menstrual cycles).
- 3. Fertilization and cleavage, blastocyst, implantation. Yolk and amniotic sac.
- 4. The development of the germ disc: origin of the intraembryonic mesoderm and notogenesis (development of the chorda dorsalis). Development of external form of the embryo and fetus (including development of limbs).
- 5. Fetal membranes, development of placenta and umbilical cord. Structure and function of the placenta. Anomalies of the placenta. Origin of multiple pregnancies and arrangement of fetal membranes.
- 6. Lenght of pregnancy, calculation of the date of parturition. Intrauterine fetal growth, monthly position of the uterus during pregnancy. Presentation, position and posture of fetus. Marks of mature and full-term fetus.
- 7. The development of cardiovascular system – primitive blood circulation, development of the heart.
- 8. Fetal blood circulation and changes after birth. An overview of congenital malformations of heart.
- 9. Pharyngeal apparatus. Development of face, oral and nasal cavities. Development of tongue. Clefts (cheilo-, gnatho-, palatoschisis).
- 10. An overview of the digestive system – primitive gut and its derivatives. An overview of the respiratory system (respiratory passages and lung, maturity of lung).
- 11. Development of urinary system.
- 12. Development of reproductive system.
- 13. Development of nervous system and the eye.

- The course is concluded by oral examination. Student will answer 1 question of general embryology and 1 question of special embryology (development of body systems).
