At the end of the course students should be able to:
1. Describe gamete development, explain principle of meiosis and regulation of gametogenesis.
2. Define the early embryonic development as well as development of fetal membranes, placenta and umbilical cord.
3. Characterize stages of embryonic development, describe the development of individual organ systems of human body.
4. Explain the mechanism of the origin of some developmental anomalies. - Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able to:
1. Describe gamete development, explain principle of meiosis and regulation of gametogenesis.
2. Define the early embryonic development as well as development of fetal membranes, placenta and umbilical cord.
3. Characterize stages of embryonic development, describe the development of individual organ systems of human body.
4. Explain the mechanism of the origin of some developmental anomalies. - Syllabus
- 1. Embryology - definition. The object and the significance of embryology, its correlation with other branches of medicine. The phases of the human ontogeny. Teratology – critical periods for the origin of congenital anomalies. Human gametes - their structure and development, regulation of gametogenesis (ovarian and menstrual cycles). Fertilization and preimplantation development 2. Implantation. Germ disc, yolk, and amniotic sac. Gastrulation, development of three germ layers, and primitive streak. Formation of the external shape of the embryo/fetus and development of limbs.
- 3. Fetal membranes, development of the placenta and umbilical cord. Structure and function of the placenta. Anomalies of the placenta. Origin of multiple pregnancies and arrangement of fetal membranes.. Length of pregnancy, calculation of the date of parturition. Intrauterine fetal growth, monthly position of the uterus during pregnancy. Presentation, position and posture of the fetus. Marks of the mature and full-term fetus.
- 4. Development of the nervous system and the eye.
- 5. The development of the cardiovascular system – primitive blood circulation, development of the heart. Fetal blood circulation and changes after birth. An overview of congenital malformations of the heart.
- 6. Development of face, oral and nasal cavities. Development of tongue. Clefts. Pharyngeal apparatus. An overview of the digestive system development – primitive gut and its derivatives. An overview of the respiratory system development (development of the trachea, bronchial tree, and lungs, lung maturity).

- The course is concluded by a written test from general and special embryology. 60% correct answers is needed to pass.
