- Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is only offered to the students of the study fields the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- Medical Laboratory Technologist (programme LF, B-LABD)
- Course objectives
- Seminars are complementary to Medical chemistry lecture (VSLC0111p). The knowledge of general, inorganic, and (bio)organic chemistry, required in the end of VCLC0111p, is thoroughly practiced during Medical chemistry seminars.
- Learning outcomes
- Students will be able to:
-understand basics of general, inorganic and organic chemistry to the extent necessary for the further study of biochemistry.
- apply general physicochemical laws to processes in living organisms.
- describe the chemical properties of the most important biogenic elements and essential compounds of importance in medicine, nutrition and toxicology.
- describe and discuss the properties and reactions of organic and bioorganic compounds important for the understanding of biochemical processes - Syllabus
- Mole, molar quantities, solutions, calculations.
- Electrolytes, activity of ions, osmotic pressure, osmolality.
- Acid-base reactions.
- Non-covalents interactions, adsorbents, surfactants. Poorly soluble salts, solubility product.
- Kinetics. Chemical equilibrium.
- Gibbs energy. Redox reactions.
- Organic compounds I.
- Organic compounds II. Latin names.
- Organic compounds III.
- Biochemically important heterocyclic compounds.
- Chemistry of saccharides.
- Amino acids and proteins.
- Lipids and steroids.
