Prerequisites
Participation in the course is conditional on the successful completion of the course ZC011.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is only offered to the students of the study fields the course is directly associated with.
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives
The main objectives of the course are to become oriented in the environment of the chemical laboratory, to experimentally verify some knowledge discussed during the theoretical teaching of Medical Chemistry, and to teach students how to process measurement results into protocols, evaluate them and draw conclusions.
Learning outcomes
Students
- will be familiar with regulations for safe handling, use, and disposal of chemicals;
- will be able to handle with basal laboratory equipment;
- will be able to prepare a solution of the given concentration;
- will understand the relationship between the composition of different solutions and their pH value;
- will be able to describe the general composition and role of the buffers, and prepare a buffer;
- to describe the essence of the formation of insoluble and poorly soluble compounds, to identify factors that can influence the insolubility of compounds;
- will be oriented in relations between a structure od bioorganic molecules and their reactivity.
Syllabus
  • Handling chemical substances.
  • Preparation of solutions.
  • Measurement of pH. Titration curves.
  • Buffers (preparation of buffers, buffer capacity).
  • Reactions of selected ions.
  • Chromatography.
  • Alcohols and sugars (oxidation of alcohols, reducing properties of sugars).
  • Amino acid, proteins (colour reactions of amino acids, isolectric point, denaturation of proteins).
Literature
    required literature
  • Podklady pro cvičení v IS.
Teaching methods
The course is realized in laboratories. Students are doing simple experiments according to the instructions in the textbook. On the base of results, they prepare the lab-reports.
Assessment methods
Course-unit credit.
Conditions for giving the course-unit credit:
- completion of all exercises;
- submission of all lab reports.
Detailed conditions are published in IS MUNI (Study materials – Course-related instructions).
Language of instruction
Czech
