- Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:
1. Understand and explain the structure of a cell, basic structural principles and function of connective tissues, epithelial tissue, structure of different types of muscle tissue, structure and function of nervous tissue.
2. Characterize microscopic structure of organs of digestive and urinary systems and endocrine glands, explain correlations of tissues within organs. - Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able to:
1. Understand and explain the structure of a cell, basic structural principles and function of connective tissues, epithelial tissue, structure of different types of muscle tissue, structure and function of nervous tissue.
2. Characterize microscopic structure of organs of digestive and urinary systems and endocrine glands, explain correlations of tissues within organs. - Syllabus
- 1. The object and the significance of the histology, an overview of tissue processing methods. General histology and cytology. Biomembranes. Structure and function of cell nucleus and organelles. Cell surfaces and intercellular junctions. Morphology of cells during cell cycle.
- 2. Cell differentiation and origin of tissues. Basic types of tissues and their characterization. Epithelial tissue – structure and function.
- 3. Connective tissue - overview and clasification. Structure, classification and function of connective tissue proper, cartilage and bone.
- 4. Muscle tissue - origin, classification, structure and function. Characteristics of skeletal and smooth muscle tissue, mechanism of the muscle contraction. Nervous tissue – origin, structure and function. Structure of neurons. Synapsis, nervous transmitters. Neuroglial cells. Sheathes of nerve fibers. Hematoencephalic barrier.
- 5. Blood. An overview of the microscopic structure of capillaries, vessels heart. Origin of lymph. Structure of lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes
- 6. An overview of microscopic structure of hollow organs. Microscopic structure and function of alimentary tract. Microscopic structure of liver and blood circulation in liver. Microscopic structure of pancreas. Cells of gastro-entero-endocrine system.
- 7. Urinary system: structure of kidney and extrarenal urinary tract. Blood circulation in the kidney. Microscopic structure and function of endocrine glands.

- The course is concluded by colloquium. Students will aswer 1 question of general histology and 1 question of microscopic anatomy.
