- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to practice the basic metabolic processes taking place at the cellular level.
- Learning outcomes
- In the end of the course will students:
- understand the properties and function of enzymes
- describes basic catabolic and anabolic pathways of carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism
- understand the principles of energy production, utilization and deposition at the cellular level
- explain the function of cell membranes and the transport processes on the membrane
- describe protein synthesis, understand the relationship between protein structure and function
- explain the function of hemoglobin in oxygen transport and maintaining acid-base balance - Syllabus
- Introduction to cell metabolism. The structure of biomembranes. Membrane transport.
- Kinetics of enzyme reactions.
- Enzyme cofactors.
- Three phases of nutrient catabolism. Citrate cycle.
- Respiratory chain. Oxidative phosphorylation. Reactive oxygen species.
- Carbohydrate digestion. Glucose metabolism. Glycogen metabolism. Metabolism of fructose and galactose.
- Digestion and intracellular degradation of proteins. Elimination of α-carboxyl and α-amino nitrogen from amino acids. Ammonia detoxification.
- Significant reactions in amino acid transformations.
- Lipid digestion. Synthesis and breakdown of fatty acids. Synthesis of triacylglycerols, phospholipids, cholesterol and bile acids. Lipoperoxidation. Eicosanoids.
- Heme biosynthesis and degradation. Hemoglobin.
- Metabolism of purine and pyrimidine nucleotides. Uric acid.

- Credit. Conditions for giving the course-unit credit:
1) completion of all seminars and 2) completion of in-term tests.
Failure to meet the requirements of in-term tests requires a resit test, which may be repeated only once. All absences must be made up before a resit test.
