- Course objectives
- Main aims of the course are:
- to get acquainted with the problematics of general and special Psychiatry and its connections to other specialisations;
- to familiarise with psychiatric terminology;
- to get acquainted with the methodology of psychiatric diagnostics and therapeutic approaches;
- to get acquainted with characteristics, symptoms, diagnostics, course and therapy of major mental disorders;
- to familiarise with the basic diagnostic and therapeutic process in patients with psychiatric symptomatology in general medical practice. - Learning outcomes
- After completing the course a student will be able to:
- Describe and classify basic disorders of mental functions;
- Perform an examination of a patient with a psychiatric disorder;
- Describe principles of the psychiatric diagnostics;
- Describe a classification and indications of biological therapeutic methods and psychotherapy;
- Describe a classification, symptoms and course of main psychiatric disorders;
- Describe management and treatment options in main psychiatric disorders;
- Perform a necessary differential diagnosis and suggest a means to manage a patient showing symptoms of a mental disorder;
- Reproduce and apply legislation pertaining to psychiatric patients, especially hospitalisation without informed consent, possession of a driving license and gun license, criminal responsibility and legal capacity. - Syllabus

TBL seminars at SIMU - Assessment methods
- CREDIT
Attendance at classes according to the schedule is required for credit to be granted. Students can only have 1 day of absence without any excuse, in the case of multiple absences, the student must make arrangements with prof. Ustohal on substitute teaching (he either replaces the missing day/days with another study group or writes a seminar paper on a topic assigned to him by doc. Ustohal). Another condition for granting credit is the successful completion of an online credit test at the end of the 2nd week of the internship in the form of the Answer Key in IS MUNI. The test contains 13 questions of the type of closed problems with the choice of one correct answer. To pass the test, the student must answer at least 10 questions correctly. In the event that he does not pass the credit test, the secretary will write to Mr. Pazderová with a request to open a remedial credit test. IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR 5TH YEAR STUDENTS VL BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF DOG-EXERCISE LESSONS (VLPY9X1c)DUTIES OF THE STUDENT BEFORE THE START OF PSYCHIATRY LESSONS - EXERCISES:
To acquire basic knowledge of general psychiatry
Take the Access Test
Before starting the course, students should gain basic knowledge of general psychiatry and medical sexology. Knowledge of general psychiatry is necessary for a full understanding of the issues discussed during face-to-face classes. This knowledge will be verified by an entrance test.
PLACE, TIME AND WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU TO LESSONS
1. What time and where do classes start?
Face-to-face classes start every day at 8:00 a.m. in the auditorium of the Psychiatric Clinic (PK) of the FN Brno, building G, 2nd floor. Students gather before classes in the hall in front of the auditorium and wait for the arrival of the teacher or secretary to let them into the auditorium.
2 Where does the teaching take place?
At the Psychiatric Clinic. The Psychiatric Clinic is located on the grounds of the Brno University Hospital, the adult workplace (Jihlavská 20) in pavilion G.
You can get to the auditorium of the Psychiatric Clinic as follows:
a) Through the side entrance from the right side of the Psychiatric Clinic from the high-rise building of the FN Brno, go up the stairs to the 2nd floor to the auditorium (not from the left side through the Crisis Center)
b) The main entrance to the Psychiatric Clinic building, to the right of the entrance are the elevators and stairs. Take the elevator or take the stairs to the 2nd floor and follow the directions to the back of the auditorium.
Simulation Center of the Faculty of Medicine (SIMU)
The simulation center of the Faculty of Medicine is located on the campus of the university at Kamenice 3. The TBL classrooms are located on the 3rd floor. The changing rooms for students are located on the 4th floor.
Please DO NOT BRING A COAT AND WEAR NARROWS into the SIMU study rooms. Clothes, shoes and personal belongings can be stored in the SIMU locker rooms on the 3rd and 4th floors.
3 What to take with you to class?
Slippers (necessary both for movement in the Psychiatric Clinic and SIMU)
Cloak (required to access the Psychiatric Clinic)
Internship sheet (is distributed on the 1st day of classes)
Smartphone / tablet / laptop (required to take online tests, especially for TBL lessons)
Willingness to learn and good behavior
We recommend having a respirator or mask with you
Note: You can keep your coats and slippers for the entire duration of the two-week teaching block in the auditorium of the Psychiatric Clinic.
HOW DOES THE PRESENCE TEACHING OF PSYCHIATRY-EXERCISE PROCEED?
At the beginning of the two-week course, students receive an Internship Sheet with a daily breakdown of taught topics, which also serves as proof of attendance. The internship sheet must be CARRIED DAILY to class and at the end of each day, the student's participation will be confirmed by the teacher's signature in the appropriate box.
It is expected that students will come to class prepared, i.e. that they will have at least the basic information that will be discussed that day. Preparation is then necessary for Team-based learning lessons (see below).
Teaching Psychiatry-exercise consists of the following elements: Educational seminars: are presentations on selected psychiatric topics. Together with the study of literature and lectures, they are supposed to provide students with theoretical information. This part of the lesson takes place in the auditorium of the Psychiatric Clinic.
Clinical case reports: these are either instructor-led patient interviews, educational videos or interactive case reports. This teaching segment is intended to serve as the first step in the application of theoretical knowledge regarding differential diagnosis and therapy in psychiatry. An active approach of students to the solution of the presented issue is expected. This part of the lesson takes place in the auditorium of the Psychiatric Clinic.
Clinical skills: this is the practice-oriented part of the teaching. This part of the teaching will take place in the inpatient wards or in the auditorium of the Psychiatric Clinic. The teacher, who has a patient demonstration on the specified day, selects the dept. The PK of the patient, suitable for the topic being discussed, will bring him with him to the auditorium (or department) and will demonstrate the examination on him. If a suitable patient is not available, the teacher can demonstrate the examination on a student volunteer.
Team-based learning (TBL) seminars: In this semester, 4 lessons taught in the TBL format are included in the teaching. This teaching takes place in TBL classrooms in the Simulation Center of the Faculty of Medicine (SIMU). TBL is a form of collaborative learning that allows students to be actively involved in the learning process. The TBL lesson structure makes it easy for students to learn to apply theoretical knowledge and acquire clinical reasoning skills. Each lesson consists of two parts: RAT (Readiness Assessment Test) and Application exercise (usually in the form of a virtual patient). Individual preparation before the lesson itself is essential for this type of teaching.
