- Course objectives
- On the seminary, the students train the analysis of the words based on the knowledge that they have reached on the lecture and from the literature. Fundamental terminology of word-formation, the system of the word-forming and the structure of this system. Methods of the word-formation, derivation, composition, abbreviation. Derivation of the nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs. Composition of the nouns and adjectives. Abbreviation. The students shall be able to analyse the word-formation using a special algorithm (including utterance by the special muster), to recognise the position of the word in the system of word-formation and the productivity.
- Learning outcomes
- The student knows basic word-forming concepts, word-formation system and its arrangement, basic word-forming methods and procedures, derivation of nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs; composition of nouns and adjectives; shortening; marginal ways of creating words. Students have the ability to analyse the word based on a specific algorithm (including formula expression), determine its inclusion into the word-formation system, and assess productivity.
- Syllabus
- 1. The science of word formation as a linguistic discipline. Relation between word formation and morphology, and also other disciplines (lexicology, syntax ...). The word-formation :: spelling relationship. Motivation.
- 2. Basic word-forming terminology. Principles of word-formation analysis. + Word formation of non-basic kinds of words. Word-forming adaptation of loan words.
- 3. Word-forming system. Derivation of words. Algorithm of word-formation analysis of derivatives. + Composing words (composition).
- 4. Creating nouns by derivation. Suffixing of nouns. Prefix and prefix-suffix (or conversion) derivation of nouns. + Composing of nouns.
- 5. Derivation of adjectives and adverbs (suffixes, prefixes, prefix-suffixes). + Composition of adjectives and adverbs.
- 6. Derivation of verbs. Derivation by suffixes and by a conversive suffix. Prefix, mixed derivation of verbs. + Verb composition.
- 7. Conversion word-formation (summary). Abbreviations. Marginal words. + Word-forming tendencies from the point of view of onomasiological procedures in a contemporary vocabulary. + Reflection of the whole semester.

- Teaching methods
- Active analytical students’ work in the analysis of Czech texts, active synthetic students’ work in the interpretation of linguistic phenomena, discussion about the professional course issues. Experience method, students teaching (in a group of students).
- Assessment methods
- To pass the course, a written test is required. The test is scored. Students must earn at least 80 % of the total points. Also the min. 80% participation in the seminar, then group lessons in the seminar (students -- in the group -- lead one seminar). Students during the semester set up a portfolio of materials from the seminar and other occasional sources (the portfolio is available to the teacher at any seminar for consultation). Students can voluntarily hand over the written lecture to the teacher for the min. one lesson in their dream primary school class (they get 5 % bonus in the final test). Details will be specified at the seminar.
