Course objectives
Students will understand the simple Old-Slavonic text in Cyrillic. They will be able to reconstruct the praslovian form of words and from the praslovian reconstructed form to define the form of the word in the Slavic languages. They gain insight into the development of Slavic languages and can recognize Old Slavonic roots of the literary, cultural and civilization values of contemporary Czech society.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to: 1. read a simple Old Slavonic text in Cyrillic and transcribe it into Latin; 2. understand a simple Old Slavonic text with the help of a dictionary; 3. reconstruct the Proto-Slavic form of words and identify changes affecting the development of Slavic languages.

  • 1. Indo-European languages. 2. Old Slavonic literature and culture, Old Slavonic writing. 3. The development of the Proto-Slavic and Old Slavonic orthography in comparison with Indo-European and living Slavic languages. 4. The development of the morphological plan of Proto-Slavonic and Old Slavonic in comparison with the Proto-Indo-European and living Slavic languages. 5. Introduction to the grammatical system of Old Slavonic. 6. Vowel and morphological analysis of Old Slavonic texts.

Teaching methods
A seminar, active analytical students´ work in the analysis of Old Church Slavonic texts, active synthetic students´ work in the interpretation of linguistic phenomena, discussion about the professional course issues.
Assessment methods
For successful completion of the course it is necessary: 1. to pass a written test (transcription of the text, identification of spelling changes, orientation in the morphological system). The test is scored, the student must obtain at least 60% of points in the test; 2. submit a seminar paper - a brief report on the assigned topic; 3. study the assigned literature. Detailed requirements are published in each semester in which the seminar takes place in the Study Materials of the course in the Learning Materials folder of the ISU.
