- Course objectives
- Acquiring a solid overview of linguistics; establishing a critical attitude towards linguistic norms; gaining knowledge in using authentic language sources for linguistic data
- Learning outcomes
- After finishing this course the students - have a global overview of all theoretical linguistics topics, especially of those relevant for modern foreign language teaching. - they have a critical attitude towards linguistic norms; - they are able to derive knowledge about the language and about linguistic phenomena from authentic language sources.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction: Language from the point of view of communication and problems of language description – some basic approaches and points of disagreement among their adherents
2. The significance of linguistics for teaching foreign languages – the different linguistic disciplines as reference points for foreigm language teaching - 3. How can linguistic concepts be applied in teaching foreign languages? Two case studies exploiting the concept of internal word structure and valence chunk
- 5. The contribution of semantics and semiotics to the field of intercultural communication
- 6. Language and pragmatics: Language as a tool for achieving things; speech acts and their realisation
- 7. Some specifics of German with respect to language structure and pragmatics: a comparative perspective form the angel of Czech/Slovak
- 8. Sources and tools of linguistic research: the modern state of the art and possible application in language teaching
- 9. Basic knowledge on language acquisition and the development of German as a first and a second language

- At the end of the lectures, students have to pass a written and an oral exam. A minimum of 60 % of the overall amount of points is required in order to pass the written exam.
- Náhradní absolvování
- Please follow the interactive sylaby for the combined study and continuously review all materials, complete the assignment as instructed (from class to class), complete all (also optional) ROPOTs, and participate in the discussion forums if set up. The PC test may be taken on an alternate date, the date of the oral exam will be set individually after return from the study stay.
