- Course objectives
- Primitive and digraphic / polygraphic orthography in Czech. The evolution of the phonetic and morphologic systems continuing the Common Slavonic / Proto-Slavic language, the lessons focus on the 14th and 15th centuries. Etymology of the selected words. Evolution of the Czech syntax from the 13th to the 18th century, esp. the hypotactic complex sentences and their conjunctions. The aim of the course is to explain the reflection of historical changes in contemporary Czech. Generalisation of the acquired knowledge for the definition of the basic natural relations of the language development.
- Syllabus
- 1 The development of the Czech phonologic system from the Common Slavonic language. The Czech reflexes replacing the Common Slavonic / Proto-Slavic sounds (nasal sounds, jers and others). The Old Czech sound contractions. 2 Old Czech language period, its characteristics. The Old Czech words and the Czech glosses inscribed in the Latin and Old Church Slavonic manuscripts. 3 Reading the Old Czech texts dated back to the 13th century. The evidence of the sound changes typical for the language system of the 13th century Czech. The main features of primitive orthography. 4 Reading the Old Czech texts from the 14th century. Comparing the13th and 14th century phonological systems. Sound changes occurring in the 14th century, its evidence in the texts. Characteristic features of digraphic orthography in Czech, its difficulties. 5 The 15th and 16th century Czech texts, the reflection of the occurred and occurring changes in these texts. Their comparison with the 14th century texts and with the Modern Czech texts. 6 The introduction to the grammar system of Czech in the 14th and 15th centuries. 7 Old Czech declension paradigms, their comparison with Modern Czech paradigms. a) The stem principle of declension of nouns; comparing the Old Czech declension paradigms with the Modern Czech paradigms; b) Nominal and compound adjectival declension; pronominal and numeral declension; c) Comparison of Old Czech declension with Old Church Slavonic and Modern Czech declension. 8 Old Czech conjugation, the classification of verbs into verbal categories. Fluctuation of verbal forms among the verbal classes and paradigms, the verbal transitions from the 1st class into others, the reasons of this phenomenon. 9 The knowledge of the evolution of the Czech phonologic and morphologic systems is a way to understand the historical reasons of the contemporary language phenomena. 10 Syntactic phenomena in the Czech manuscripts from the 14th century. Study the evolution of conjunctions. Examples of the development of the most frequent conjunctions. Conjunctions and particles, conjunctions and interjections.
