Course objectives
During the course, students get acquainted with the most important tendencies in diachronic change concerning the German language after World War II. At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- distinguish between linguistic changes and changes in the no-linguistic sections of language competence,
- recall the most important tendencies of development in modern German,
- recognize the effects of linguistic change in language material,
- analyze language material in a chosen domain with regard to resent linguistic innovations.
Syllabus
  • During classes, the most important tendencies of language change in the second half of the 20. century will be presented:
  • - pronunciation,
  • - simplification of the declension system,
  • - morphological changes in the verbal domain,
  • - syntactic changes,
  • - changes in the lexicon and integration of loan words.

Credits are assigned on the basis of a seminar paper (about 5 pages) which contains an analysis of relevant language material illustrating some resent tendencies in the development of German.
