Course objectives
At the end of this course student understands the sound part of human communication that is created by the speech organs. Student will be familiar with fundamental phonetic and phonological knowledge, accoustic speech structure and comparison of written adn oral performance. Student will master the phonetic transcription, with the principles of orthography and orthoepy,classification of the vowels and consonants and the structure of the syllabl. Student will understand the segmentation of the continuous speech and Czech pronunciation rules ( home and loan words), the variants of the pronunciation of phonemes in the continuous speech, sound structure of the Czech and its graphical record.

  • 1. Phonetics and phonology as linguistic disciplines. 2. Relation between phonetics and phonology. 3. Phonetic and phonologic transcription. 4. Classification of the phones and phonemes in Czech according to the phonetics and phonology. 5. Sound means in of continuous speech.Intonation, stress, melody. 6. Literary pronunciation of home and loan words. 7. Sound structure of the Czech language and its graphical record.

Teaching methods
The type of tuition is a compulsory seminar. Seminar credit excercises are focused on the culture of spoken and written performances. They also focus on the basics of phonetics and phonology. Textual analysis - identification of the language phenomena in the text, - problem method - controlled discussion During the term students shall prepare a speach excercise on their own.Continuous written checks according to the Czech spelling rule will be part of the tuition. 1. First checked section will be marking the sounds by letters, abbreviations,marks). Second checked section will be capital letters, word boundaries in written texts, dividing marks) Two mistakes are acceptable in twenty sentences. 2. Inventory of the Czech sounds, phonetic transcription and clasification of the sounds. Three mistakes are acceptable.
Assessment methods
The expectations for the successful passing this exam is mastering the curriculum of the syllabus. This will be verified by the exam. The exam consists of two parts: written one and oral one. To pass the subject successfully, student must write the tests during the term.The marks from all tests will be included into the final mark. According to the Masaryk University Study and Examination Regulations, there will be no re-corections of these tests written during the term. Dates of these tests will be announced via IS at the beginning of the semester.Fulfiling the requirements is the necessity to be allowed to sit the final exam. According to the Study and Examination Regulations of Masaryk University it is possible to apply in justified cases, (in written form) to finish the subject in second re- sit. The attendance is compulsory.
