- Course objectives
- Students will learn about classical texts in history of mathematics and about the possibilities to use history of mathematics in mathematics teaching.
- Syllabus
- 1. Role of history of mathematics in mathematics education 2. Completing the square (Babylonian mathematics) 3. Ancient Egyptian tasks: selection 4. Euclid's Elements: selected passages 5. Alcuin: Propositiones ad Acuendos Juvenes (selection) 6. Algorismus prosaycus (Křišťan z Prachatic) 7. Cardano: Ars magna (selection) 8. Isaac Newton: Prinicipia (selection) 9. Reading: Mersenne, Cogitata physico-mathematica. Little theorem of Fermat. Fermat last theorem 10. Reading: beginnings of probability calculus (Pierre de Fermat and Blaise Pascal, Thomas Bayes). 11. Different definitions of the limit (Wallis, Newton, Maclaurin, D’Alembert, Cauchy) 12. Reading: matrices (Gauss, Cayley, Frobenius)
