- Course objectives
- Students will practice and work on improvement of their language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) and language means (vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation). Students will further enhance their soft skills (e.g. use of signpost language in presentations) and critical thinking. They will also learn to analyze the language for the purpose of teaching.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, students will have improved their English language skills, working towards accomplishing C1 according to CEFR.
- Syllabus
- This year will focus on the improvement of study skills. The syllabus will cover self-assessment, finding appropriate resources, and all of the major language areas. The core study materials primarily come from the coursebook New English File Advanced, Units 1-2 and additional electronic-based materials in VLE MOODLE. The topics will include: 1. Motivation: setting SMART goals in English language learning 2. Job, work and motivation, discourse markers, cohesion and coherence 3. Personality and identity, varieties of 'have' in the context 4. English language as lingua franca 5. Language terminology in English language teaching 6. Narratives, narrative tenses 7. Formal register in writing focused on electronic communication 8. Memory and its potential in learning and teaching 9. Multitasking 10. Time, idiomatic expressions with 'time' 11. Foreign language borrowings in English, phrasal verbs 12. Summary, revision

- Oral projects, written assignments, class discussions, practical exercises, individual projects, online group discussions.
- Assessment methods
- The general pass mark for this course is 70%. Students must pass a continuous assessment of their work during the course of the whole semester.
The continuous assessment will be based on work done in class as well as out-of-class assignments and a final test during the examination period. The out-of-class assignments include discussion online, setting SMART goals in English language learning, and a written essay. - Language of instruction
