- Course objectives
- At the end of this course student understands the sound part of human communication that is created by the speech organs. Student willbe familiar with fundamentalphonetic and phonological knowledge, accoustic speech structure and comparison of written and oral performance. Student will master the phonetic transcription, with principles of ortography and comparison of written and orthoepy, classification of the wowels and consonants and the structure of the sylabl. Student will understand the segmentation of the continuous speech and Czech pronuncation relles (home and loan words), the variant sof the pronuncation of phonemes in the continuouns speech, sound structure of the Czech and its correct graphical record.

- 1. Phonetics and phonology as linguistic disciplines. 2. Relation between phonetics and phonology. 3. Phonetic and phonology transcription. 4. Clasification of the phones and phonemes in Czech according to the phonetics and phonology. 5. Sound meansin of continuos speech. Intonation, stress, melody. 6. Literary pronuncation of home and loan words. 7. Sound structure of the Czech language and its correct graphical record. 8. Rules of the Czech orthography.

- Teaching methods
- Type of tuition: Seminar excercises focused on the culture of spoken and writen expression and basic of phonetics and phonology. Textual analysis: identification of the phonetic phenomena in the text, probleme method, controlled discussion.
- Assessment methods
- Final test consisting of the examination of the knowledge of 1) phonetic transcription, 2) voice classification and 3) theory and terminology. Students must obtain at least 75 % right answers. The prerequisite for the examination is to master the Czech spelling, which will be verified by a dictate consisting of about 13 sentences (3 errors at maximum). The dictate is written within the semester, another term is the end of the teaching period, the last on in the beginnenig of January (unless the student repeats) at the beginning of January. Specific terms of the dictate will be published at the beginning of the semester. The attendance is compulsory.
