- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to acquaint students with selected topics of general didactics, the theory of education, educational diagnostics and the theory of elementary reading and writing. The course is aimed at creating basic teaching skills related to planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching. It provides a clear structure of the educational process in the theoretical and empirical context. It contributes to the development of pedagogical thinking.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon finishing the course the student can: • explain and justify the transformation of the curriculum of basic education; • describe the objectives, content and means of education, with a special emphasis on personal development in the moral and aesthetic areas, etc.); • characterize the educational activities of the class teacher; • use methods and tools of pedagogical diagnostics to diagnose individuals and groups; • evaluate the level of student achievement in accordance with the objectives set; • Use student portfolios in working with pupils as a means of diagnosis • differentiate project-based teaching from thematic teaching, know the phases of the project-based method and its characteristics; • explain the importance of a strategic development plan for the class; • explain the basic principles of teaching the basics of reading and writing in the Czech Republic; • familiarize themselves with the significance of John Amos Comenius (teacher of the nations).

- 1. Current schools and perspectives on changes in them. 2. Personality development in the curriculum of basic education. 3. Transformations in the curriculum of basic education. 4. Diagnosis as part of the work of a class teacher. 5. Assessment of educational outcomes. 6. Pupil portfolios and working with them. 7. Project-based instruction. 8. Classroom management. 9. Basic principles of teaching reading and writing in the first year of primary school in the Czech Republic. 10. The legacy of J. A. Comenius.

- Assessment methods
- Colloquium (min. number of points 12). Assessment criteria: a) 80% attendance (5 points) b) active participation in seminars (5 points) c) completion of assigned tasks in teaching practice (link with the subject Teaching Practice for the first five grades of primary school) • Working on a strategy plan for class development (length of at least 3-5 pages (5 points) d) presentation and active participation in the final colloquium (5 points).
