- Course objectives
- The course deals with contemporary British and postcolonial literature in the context of current political, cultural and social events in the Anglo-Saxon world and with application into the teaching practice. The seminar develops the student both on a personal and professional level via critical reading and thinking and through hands-on work with texts. The subject demonstrates ways in which art reflects the contemporary world, the potential of reading in developing learning competencies and methods which can be applied in teaching. The ultimate objective of the class is to educate future teachers and cultivate their attitude to reading as well as exercise their critical thinking and reading strategies. It seeks to acquaint students with some selected works by contemporary authors generated from English-speaking countries using topics relevant for secondary school age. The course places a heavy emphasis on day-to-day work, which means reading assigned texts, whether it be extracts for class work or independent extensive reading. You are encouraged to participate in class activities and discussions. The class aims to set a model of modern teaching; therefore, try to follow the content as well as methods employed.
- Learning outcomes
- By the end of the course the students will: a) have become acquainted with contemporary trends and events in Anglo-Saxon literature, culture and society; b) will have read, analysed and discussed a number of texts by contemporary authors; c) will have engaged in a number of class activities demonstrating the use of literature in the classroom; d) will have read two contemporary novels in English; e) will have practised their English in pair, group and class discussions and activities.

- CONTINUOUS AND FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT 1. Regular class work and independent study. 2. Active participation in class. 3. Group leading. 4. Action research and activity. IN CASE OF ONLINE SEMESTER: Students are requested to secure good internet connection. attend zoom meetings with the sound and camera on and work actively in the online environment. SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT 1. Portfolio. 2. Two novels (variations apply) to be read. There will be a short interview looking at your work throughout the semester and discussing the two books you have read. I will be asking about your reading experience both from the class and of the books you selected for reading.
