Course objectives
At the end of the course the student will be able: 1. to understand of the alternative methods and the methods of the critical thinking; 2. to use the alternative methods - the methods should develop active, effective learning; 3. to use the methods of the critical thinking in teaching Czech, especially in grammar and stylistic lessons at the primary school and at the grammar school. Gained educational methods correspond to the Framework Education Programme for Elementary Education requirements and for the Framework Education Programme for Secondary General Education (Grammar Schools).
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to:
1. understand the concepts of alternative methods, methods of critical thinking;
2. practically use alternative methods;
3. to use methods of critical thinking in teaching the Czech language, especially grammar and style at primary school and grammar school.
Syllabus
  • 1. Theoretical ground of the Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking (RWCT) program.
  • 2. Conditions for developing critical thinking at school.
  • 3. Creation of the environment for developing critical thinking in the Czech language lessons at lower secondary and grammar school.
  • 4. Asking questions – Bloom’s Taxonomy.
  • 5. Three-stage learning cycle: Evocation – Realization of Meaning – Reflection.
  • 6.–8. Methods and strategies for developing critical thinking in the Czech language lessons at lower secondary and grammar school.
  • 9.–12. Practical usage of chosen methods and strategies in the Czech language lessons at lower secondary and grammar school.

Teaching methods
A seminar, active class discussions among students about topics being talked over, class presentation - application of discussed methods and teaching strategies, homeworks
Assessment methods
The subject is ended by a credit. Compulsory attendance. Homework is required in the course of the term. They submit a portfolio that includes the application of methods based on chosen topics of Czech language grammatical or stylistic subject matter to get a credit. Detailed requirements are available in each term in Study Materials of the course in the Information System MU, the folder Learning Materials.
