Course objectives
The lecture builds on the morphological knowledge of the French professional language and includes a theoretical explanation of the questions of its composition. Knowledge is practiced and deepened in the seminar on the examples of professional texts. The aim of the course is to enable students to understand the composition of a French sentence, the function of part of speech in sentence members, the structure and specifics of professional language and the regularity of the conformity of the subject with the predicate; further analyze sentences in coordination and subordination relations and explain the word order in individual types of sentences.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able to: master the terminology needed for syntactic analysis of a sentence; identify sentence members and word order; understand the structure of simple sentences and clauses with a focus on the relationship between syntax and morphology in professional French; interpret the specifics of syntactic analysis of professional texts; specify types of sentences and clauses.
Syllabus
  • Part of speech (parties du discours) - repetition of terminology, examples. Functions of part of speech: sentence members (membres de la proposition) - terminology and examples. Functions of nouns in various sentence members. Verb functions. Subject and predicate. Subject verb agreement. Types of predicates. Participles and their functions, their use in professional language. Types of sentences. French sentence structure. Specifics of professional language. Coordinate sentences, coordination relations. Juxtaposition. Subordinate clauses: subordinate clauses according to their function.
