- Course objectives
- The course covers the period of the 19th century British literature, from mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth cenury. At the end of the course, students will be able to identify, individually interpret,question, and critically evaluate major works of the period at the cultural, social, and historical context.

- 1. Gender issues and the Victorian period (Charlotte Brontë, George Eliot). 2. Charles Dickens and the use of his story in the ELT classroom 3. Victorian morals, prejudices, pretences and double-standards (Robert Louis Stevenson, Oscar Wilde) 4. The fall of the empire (Rudyard Kipling, Joseph Conrad) 5. Naturalism (Thomas Hardy, George Gissing, W.S. Maugham) 6. Modernism (Virginia Woolf) and the War poets
