- Course objectives
- At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- distinguish noncellular and cellular (pro- and eukaryotic) organisms.
- describe memory, membrane and cytoskeletal principles of the cells.
- understand and explain basic processes which take place at the cellular level in living organisms - the grounds of cellular and molecular biology and genetics.
- illustratively explain the center of a genetic code, its redundancy and universality by way of selected examples.
- describe in detail the expression of genetic information, particularly transcription and translation.
- explain nucleosome structure of chromosome.
- describe the course of cell cycle and analyse the importance of its parts; student can relate the significance of understanding the cell cycle conception for applied science and for man’s healthy life – cancer treatment, stem cells, organs transplantation, pharmacogenetics.
- explain the terms: telomere, apoptosis, necrosis and elucidate an importance of these structures and processes for cellular (organism’s) senescence and death.
- describe the organization of membrane and cytoskeletal structures and understand their functions in eukaryotic cell.
- illustratively explain the process of signals reception and their processing by cell as well matter transport inside and out of an eukaryotic cell.

- Taxonomy of organisms (noncellular and cellular organisms - differencies and basic division).
- Cell theory and principles of cells functional organization (memory, membrane and cytoskeletal principles).
- Differencies between pro- and eukaryotic cells.
- Cell cycle. Cell necrosis, cell apoptosis. Destiny of cells in multicellular (human) organism.
- Memory principle. Central dogma of molecular biology (replication, transcription, reverse transcription, translation).
- Expression of genetic information, genetic code, posttranscriptional and posttranslational modifications.
- News from molecular genetics: human genes for sports performance, for issue of pathological addictions leading to obesity, etc.
- Membrane principle. General structure of biomembranes. Membrane transfer (diffusion, osmosis, membrane channels, carrier proteins, endo- and exocytosis). Membrane receptors. Signaling cascades. Types of interactions between a cell and a virus.
- Plasmatic membrane. Individual organelles of eukaryotic cells - their structure and function in cells.
- Cytoskeletal principle. Microtubules, actin microfilaments and intermediate filaments - their structure and function in cells.
- Molecular motors. Movement at the cellular level. Nuclear skeleton, membrane skeleton, exoskeleton.
- Cell in light and electron microscope. Fluorescent microscopy – principle, application. Direct and indirect fluorescence. Visualization of cell structures by use of fluorescent microscopy.

- Teaching methods
- In the first part of a term students should put together 50 model tasks and experiments from the cellular and molecular biology/genetics and genetics field of study – transcription and translation of genetic information, DNA replication, point mutation process of origin. In the second part of a term, the topics in question are: surveying of selected histological sections, cells pictures and chosen parts of educational videoprograms that concern chapters on structure and function of various types of human body cells and tissues.
- Assessment methods
- Colloquium. At the end of this course, students complete a written test consisting of 50 questions. If they answer 35 questions correctly, they pass the test. After evaluation, a discussion follows in which the correct answers of previously asked questions are repeated and explained again.
