- Course objectives
- The goal of the course is to provide students with a comprehensive overview of the development of Slavic languages and their subsequent division into three branches. The course focuses on the phonetic, grammatical and semantic changes that occurred during the development of individual Slavic languages (mainly Czech and Russian). Emphasis is also placed on the historical and cultural contexts that led to the creation of both Czech and Russian as well as to the changes of the Czech and Russian language standards.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course the student will be able
to describe in the main features the development of Slavic languages (especially Russian and Czech);
to identify important differences between Russian and Czech from a diachronic perspective;
to define the basic factors that influenced the historical development of Slavic languages;
to apply the acquired knowledge in the teaching of Russian. - Syllabus
- 1. Historical development of Slavic languages as a scientific discipline. Subject of research, methods, research resources.
- 2. Praslovan, dialectal cleavage of the Praslovanese.
- 3. Old Slavic language as the first written language of the Slavs (Glagolitic and Cyrillic, written monuments, fate of the Old Slavic language).
- 4. East Slavonic languages (overview, East Slavic languages in comparison).
- 5. West-Slavonic languages (overview, West Slavonic languages in comparison).
- 6. South Slavic languages (overview, South Slavic languages in comparison).
- 7. Russian and its position among the Slavic languages.
- 8. Russian as a World Language.
- 9. Current status of Slavic languages (territory, number of speakers, language situation).
- 10. Russian and Czech in comparison (basic consistency and differences of the phonetic system).
- 11. Russian and Czech in comparison (basic consistency and differences of lexical-semantic system).
- 12. Russian and Czech in comparison (basic and morphological and syntactical differences).
