Course objectives
The aim of the course is to understand the state of the art in the field of first and second language acquisition both in natural setting and in formal education.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, a student will be able to:
explain the approaches and theories of second language acquisition;
understand the implications of the theories for foreign language teaching;
understand factors influencing second language acquisition;
outline the relevance of the theories for their dissertation research.
Syllabus
  • The course of Second language acquisition is a core component of the study programme. Students will be acquainted with individual hypotheses and theories of language acquisition and with the role of important factors that influence these processes. Topics: • Behaviorism and nativism. • Sociocultural and cognitive approaches to foreign language acquisition. • Constructivism, social interactionism, connectionism, information processing. • Models/hypothesis of multiple language acquisition (multipler Spracherwerb), implications for foreign language teaching. • Factors influencing the process of language acquisition.
