- Course objectives
- The aim of the optional course "Writers read their writing" is to crete a format which would innovate and improve the quality in teaching contemporary Czech literature at the Faculty of Education, Masaryk university. The course corresponds well to other courses students alredy attend: Czech literature after 1945 2, Recent Czech literature and literary studies or Forms of the recent Czech literature. The course aims at introducing outstanding personalities (authors) of the contemporary Czech literature and fiction during four evening sessions. It is our intention to meet the authors (one, two or three) in a larger lecture hall and present them as representatives of dominant trends in the contemporary Czech literary production.
- Learning outcomes
- A piece of literature conceived as a communicative act (i.e. the act of communication between the author and the reader) is the basic requirement of the national curriculum (Framework Education Programme). This project has the potential to contribute in a significant way to the motivation of students to study contemporary Czech literature and we can also assume that it could also support students' creative efforts and activities.
- Syllabus
- All the seminars (sessions) will have a unified structure. First the authors are briefly introduced, then they read from their own work and a group discussion follows. The discussion is initiated by a pre-set group of students who, together with their teacher, have prepared for the discussion in moodlinka. The basic features of the author's poetics (their motivation, background, the way they approach reality) are touched upon as well as their artistic reflection of today's world. The image of the author as reflected in contemporary literary reviews will be outlined.
- Teaching methods
- The method of a group discussion has the potential to help students extend not only their knowledge of a particular personality, but also point to the constant features of the whole literary process which the author is part of.
- Assessment methods
- Students will submit an essay (1-2 pages) in which they will evaluate whether and how the sessions contributed to their learning.
- Language of instruction
- Czech
