Course objectives
Pharmacology is a scientific discipline that deals with the study of the effects of substances on the organism. It studies the action of substances administered to affect physiological systems and pathological conditions. Pharmacology examines a drug from the moment it is administered to the patient, when it becomes a drug, to its complete elimination.
Learning outcomes
The course introduces students to the basics of pharmacology in cosmetology. The subject focuses on the basic classification of available drugs and their main therapeutic indications. The student will gain basic insight into drug issues. Special emphasis is placed on dermatology and other drugs affecting the quality of skin, hair and nails.
Syllabus
  • - Introduction to the study of pharmacology - basic terminology, drug life cycle, dosage forms, topical dosage forms, drug transport through skin barriers.
  • - Pharmacodynamic mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetic mechanisms - time course of drugs in the body, factors affecting the individualization of therapy.
  • - Pharmacotherapeutic complications – undesirable and toxic effects of drugs, drug interactions, drug related problems manifesting on the skin.
  • - Vegetative nervous system – sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system.
  • - Medicines affecting the central nervous system, medicines used in pain therapy.
  • - Medicines affecting the cardiovascular system.
  • - Medicines affecting the respiratory system.
  • - Medicines affecting the digestive system.
  • - Medicines affecting metabolism.
  • - Medicines affecting the urogenital system.
  • - Medicines affecting allergic reactions, topical antiallergics, antibiotics – topical antibiotics.
  • - Dermatologicals I.
  • - Dermatologicals II.
  • - Vitamins, minerals – overview, indications, side effects, contraindications, vitamins and minerals affecting the quality of skin, hair and nails.
