Course objectives
Course objectives:
* to introduce students to the basic aims and methods of linguistics;
* explain the concept of a linguistic sign and teach students how to work with it;
* explain the differences between synchronic and diachronic methodologies in linguistics;

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:
- understand language as a system of signs
- distinguish between the concepts of synchronic and diachronic methodology in linguistics
- know the basic terminology of linguistics
