Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the basics of Italian phonetics and phonology (phonetic and phonological system of contemporary Italian, spelling and segmental and suprasegmental aspects such as syllabification, stress and intonation). The second part of the course will be devoted to the description of the origin of Italian and its development, with some knowledge of sociolinguistic characteristics.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will be able to define the basic concepts of phonetics and phonology, describe the phonological system of the Italian language, apply the acquired knowledge in practice and will also know how to navigate the basic stages of the development of the Italian language.

  • Basics of Italian phonetics and phonology. Vocalic and consonantal system of contemporary written Italian. Segmental and suprasegmental aspects: syllabification, accent, intonation. Introduction to the origin and formation of the Italian language.
