- Course objectives
- The course is an introduction to the Italian literature tradition through the reading of selected literature from the major Italian writers of the 20th century. Students will be guided in the achievement of a comprehensive view of the Italian literature of the Twentieth Century, its major authors and trends, considered in their literary and historical context.
- Learning outcomes
- The purpose of this course is to acquaint students with the history of Italian literature through the reading of selected works from the 20th century. Students are guided to study the basics of philology and stylistic analysis and acquire ability to investigate the macro- and micro-textual levels of the literary works.
- Syllabus
- 13 lessons of 100 minutes each. Readings covered in the course: - Pascoli, D'annunzio - Pirandello, Svevo - Futurismo, vociani, rondisti - Ungaretti, Montale e Saba - L'ermetismo - Neorealismo e realismo magico - Gadda Students will be guided in the readings of a selections of literary texts from the above mentioned authors and literary movements. Each reading serves as an introduction to the study of the writers’ poetics and the literary trends of the first half of the 20th century. Students will receive a brief anthology of criticism which wil be introduced and explain by the teacher.

- Teaching methods
- The course will be conducted in Italian. Students will be guided in the reading of the literary pieces. Students will receive weekly assignments and will be expected to actively participate in the class discussions. Students will receive a brief antology of criticism which will be explained by the teacher during the her lessons. Students are suggested to attend the departmental seminars on Leopardi and Dante of Spring semester 2021.
- Assessment methods
- Attendance and active participation in class discussions. Final written exam. Students will be also required to produce a written review on a pre-agreed work of criticism concerning one of the author to be studied and which belongs to the above mentioned anthology of works of criticism.
