Course objectives
Course explains the evolution of Christian Church since 313 in specific terms of Byzantine Empire up to 1453. Special attention is paid to seven ecumenical councils, acknowledged by the Orthodox Church. Gradual accretion of differences between the Western and Eastern Churches (resulting even in ecclesiastical schism) is being analysed during the lectures. Attention is paid to the orthodox liturgy and its graphic art and architecture. Interpretation of history of old oriental Churches and Balkan autocephaly Churches of Bulgaria and Serbia are the integral part of lectures, as well as their graphic art and architectural specifics. Course is focused also on the evolution of the Orthodox Church within the terms of Ottoman Empire and its influence on preservation of national identity of Balkan nations as well as on the establishment of national myths promoted by the Orthodox Church (e.g. the Kosovo myth).
