Course objectives
The course is a continuation of the The Arabic World in the Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages I. It deals with the development of the Islamic caliphates in East and West and presents the ethical system of Islam in the Middle Ages, the basics of its law, and the significance of its culture and science.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course student will be able to understand the Muslim civilization as the heir of Arabic, Persian and Classical tradition; will be able to explain the islamic ethics and to compare it with that of Judaism and Christianity; to find the common themes of these three world religions and possibilities of mutual understanding; to evaluate the role of Arabic culture during the Middle Ages; to discuss the values of Muslim civilization objectively; will be acquainted with the contribution of Arabic science and technology for medieval Europe.
Syllabus
  • 1) The era of the Umayyad dynasty and great Islamic invasions. Conflicts with Byzantine Empire.
  • 2) The coexistence of Muslims and the local inhabitants of today´s Spain muslimů (al-Andalus). Muslims in Italy and Sicily.
  • 3) The Umayyad Caliphate.
  • 4) The rule of the Abbasid dynasty, its heyday during the rule of Haruna ar-Rašíd and its gradual decline.
  • 5) The Islamic Ummah, its religious, social, and ethical characteristics.
  • 6) The institutions and legal systems of the Islamic empires.
  • 7) Economy in the caliphate in the East and in al-Andalus; new technologies in agriculture and crafts.
  • 8) Islam and war.
  • 9) Muslims and ancient legacy. The influences of Judaism and Christianity on Islam.
  • 10) Literature of the Arabs and the Muslim world in the Middle Ages; Sufism (Muslim mystics). Architecture and arts.
  • 11) Cordoba and its educational system; contribution of the Islamic science and culture for Europe.
  • 12) Final discussion.
