- Course objectives
- The lectures indroduces methodology and terminology of translation studies. Student will learn basic translatologic concepts of its branches (literary translation, academic translation), will recognise their main factors, training methods and will learn how to define and use basic concepts (translation as a process and a result of the process, target text; translator, translator´s competences; types of translations; equivalency, functional adequacy; function of the translation). The aim of the course is to learn to use academic argumentation to the lecture and the evaluation of various aspects of translation work on the basis of acquired knowledge; in the context of literary criticism and translation professions when dealing with clients.
- Learning outcomes
- Students will be able to:
- define and apply principal terms of the theory of translation,
- engage in a theoretical-argumentative discourse concerning particular fields within principal concepts of translation theory, while dealing with clients,
- establish communicative functions of source text and target text based on a hypothetical translation commission,
- work in a practical and strategic way with the principal concepts of the theory of translation while dealing with a commission,
- use their research skills in completing a translation,
- use their intercultural competencies in translation, based on the genre of target text. - Syllabus

- - Features of the literary text and the literary translation vs. non-literary translation
- - Translation as a performative – communicative function and the meaning of the text
- - Pragmatics in the translation; genre and translating
- - Translation strategies (skopos, fidelity, adequacy, loyality, constructive and creative translating)
- - Translation and theory of interliterary relations
- - Tradition of reception
- - Equivalency and translation
- - Adequacy and translation
- - Cognitive science and translation, the point of semantics of prototype for translating
- - Semantics of the scene and the frame
- - Dynamic patterns of thinking for translating
