Course objectives
W ramach zajęć studenci poznają wybitnych twórców literatury polskiej XIX i XX wieku. Chodzi przede wszystkim o lekturę fragmentów ich dzieł (proza, dramaty) lub wierszy opatrzoną komentarzami dotyczącymi ich życia, twórczości i kontekstu epoki. Pod uwagę brane są też ważne wydarzenia i rocznice, np. Rok Czesława Miłosza (2011), Rok Henryka Sienkiewicza (2016), Rok Zbigniewa Herberta (2008 i 2018), Rok C. K. Norwida, S. Lema, T. Różewicza i K.K. Baczyńskiego (2021) albo Rok Romantyzmu Polskiego (2022). W takich przypadkach przez cały semestr poświęcamy uwagę konkretnym twórcom.
Learning outcomes
Absolwent będzie w stanie:
- analizować ważne teksty autora z wykorzystaniem znajomości jego biografii oraz tła historycznego i kulturalnego,
- przedstawić znaczenie i rolę konkretnych twórców,
- przedstawić konteksty interpretacyjne,
- dyskutować o tych tematach i poprawnie argumentować.
Syllabus
  • Czesław Miłosz:
  • 1. Seteiniai (Lithuania) – Miłosz 's native place. • 2. Miłosz memorialized his Lithuanian childhood in novel "The Issa Valley". • 3. Study period in Vilnius and his first volume of poetry. • 4. In 1931 he co-founded the Polish avant-garde literary group "Zagary". • 5. Miłosz spent World War II in Warsaw - collection of verse "The Rescue". • 6. After World War II, Miłosz served as cultural attaché of the communist People's Republic of Poland in Paris. • 7. He revealed the problems of intellectuals living under Stalinism - "The Captive Mind" and "The Seizure of Power" (1953). • 8. In 1960 he moved to the United States to become a lecturer in Polish literature at the University of California at Berkeley. • 9. In 1980 Miłosz received the Nobel Prize for Literature. • 10. Miłosz 's support to the Solidarity movement and his comeback to Poland. • 11. New books of poetry after 1989. • 12. Poet's death in Cracov and "The Last Poems" (2006).

  • 1. Lvov – Herbert's native place. • 2. The Second World War and Home Army (AK). • 3. Study period and socrealism in Poland. • 4. Polish October 1956 and Herbert's debut. • 5. Book of essays The Barbarian in the Garden and poet’s trips. • 6. Book of poetry Mr. Cogito and Herbert's hero. • 7. Herbert's support to the Solidarity movement - comeback to Poland at the 1981. • 8. Poet published in 'second circulation' and in 1986 he moved to Paris. • 9. New books of poetry after 1989. • 10. Epilogue to a Storm – poet's death in Warsaw.
