Course objectives
In the preparatory part of the course, the lectures will focus on the definition of phraseology and the classification of frazeologisms, and alsto on the introduction of basic phraseological dictionaries, both Greek and Czech. In the practical part, students will analyze and interpret phraseologisms in various types of Greek texts (texts of common communication, journalistic texts, literary texts) and look for functional equivalents in the Czech language, with emphasis on the various translation possibilities and on the translation of phraseologisms specific to the source language and its cultural context. It will include online support (course in Elf) with exercises aimed at practicing different types of phraseologisms (idioms, similes, proverbs, common collocations etc.) and their translation.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- recognize phraseologisms according to their individual features and classify them (idioms, proverbs, collocations);
- understand the meaning of Greek phrases in a given text and interpret their meaning;
- find the functional equivalent in English;
- determine the degree of equivalence with the Czech language.
Syllabus
  • 1. General characteristics of phraseology, classification of phraseologisms, phraseological dictionaries;
  • 2. Phrases and idioms, similes, sayings, etc. - characteristics and examples of use, translation;
  • 3. Cultural phrases (phrases from mythology and biblical mythology) - characteristics and examples of use, translation;
  • 3. Cultural phraseologisms (phraseology of mythology and biblical phraseology) - characteristics and examples of use, translation;
  • 4. Historical phraseologisms - characteristics and examples of use, translation;
  • 5. Paremiology - characteristics and examples of use, translation;
  • 6.-14. Translation of texts with different types of phraseologisms with a focus on functional equivalence and specifics of the cultural environment of the target and source languages;
