Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of DAW (digital audio workstation). Interest in recording technology, sound in its wider possible usage, not only musical. There is no required knowledge and familiarity with practice of recording technique.

Course objectives
Students will learn the basic approach to recording sound atmospheres in the context of field recording (phonography) or audiovisual film. The aim of the course is to prepare theoretically, technically, formally and in terms of content for the creation of sound atmospheres in the form of synthesis, which will take place in a follow-up course in the spring semester.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, learners will be able to:
choose and prepare a suitable technique for capturing and recording the sound atmosphere according to the assignment
prepare a diagram and a plan of ideas for creating a sound atmosphere and evaluate it.
Syllabus
  • 1st block
  • Explanation of the course content and description of the task. All semester activities in this course will be directed toward mastering the prerequisites for making technically sound quality recordings for creating sonic atmospheres through synthesis.
  • Block 2
  • Context of field recording (phonography), location sound vs. studio sound, acoustic ecology, aural history, etc. Sharing a documentary with a selection of atmospheres, discussion.
  • Block 3.
  • Demonstration and rehearsal of technique + review of assignment. Refinement of bit depth, sample rate, gain staging. Reflection on selection of atmospheres and motions, discussion.

  • Going through the assignments together and reflection.

Assessment methods
The overall course grade consists of your attendance in class (two unexcused absences are allowed) and successful and timely submission of the assignment. If a requirement is not met, you cannot be assigned an "z" grade.

Assignments - drawings + verbal description of the atmosphere - enter the date due the current syllabus in the organizational guidelines in the information system in the course submission room. In the last class we will review and evaluate the assignments in a joint colloquium.
