Course objectives
Introduction to Classical Greek. Analysis of the morphological and syntactic phenomena of the normative grammar. Reading of Classical Greek texts (according to Lexis: A,B,C; 1-9).
Syllabus
  • 1. Characteristics of Classical Greek.
  • 2. Phonetics and phonology (including prosody: accent, intonation).
  • 3. Survey of the development of vowels and consonants and of orthography.
  • 4. Declension of the o-stems; present system of verbs; construction of A+I; atributive and predicative position of the article.
  • 5. Declension of the a-stems; adjectives of the 1st and 2nd declension; active imperfect; irreal conditional mood and wish clauses with verbs in the imperfective form; substantivized infinitive.
  • 6. Declension of the a-stems and o-stems: contracted forms; deponentia; Accusativus respectus.
  • 7. Present system of verbs in mediopassive forms; mediopassive present participle; construction of the participium absolutum.
  • 8. Mediopassive imperfect; formation of adverbs; construction of N+I, participium coniunctum.
  • 9. Asigmatic aorist of verbs; irreal conditional clauses with verbs in the perfective forms.
  • 10. Relative pronouns; sigmatic aorist of verbs; sigmatic future system of verbs of vocalic or explosive consonantal stems; final clauses with future participle.
  • 11. Personal, possessive and demonstrative pronouns; regular comparison of adjectives and adverbs; construction of A+participle.
  • 12. Declension of the consonantal stems on explosives.
