Course objectives
Students should get familiar with the problematic of the motion picture material and its preservation for future generations in the archives. The course will consist of five larger parts, each of them dedicated to a different aspect of the problem. Attention of the students will be drawn given not only to the problems of preservation, but also to related practical and ethical questions. We will observe institutions taking care of the preservation of motion pictures (and other audiovisual carriers), study their history, typology and their recent international cooperation. The case studies section of the course will present some of the restorations, made in the Czech Republic, as well as abroad. The last part of the course will be open to discussion and it will pay attention to the issues of digital media and their use for presentation purposes.
