Course objectives
At the end of the course, the students should be able to explain the developement of the medieval Latine literature to the 11th century; to name and arrange in the chronological order the main authors of medieval Latin prose and poetry; to describe their work and its importance; to interpret the most important writings of the period.
Syllabus
  • 1) The most important genres of Medieval Latin literature and their development
  • 2) Specific features of medieval literature
  • 3) Preconditions of literary development in the late Roman period
  • 4) Overview of Latin patristics
  • 5) So called interim period in different parts of Europe
  • 6) 9th-10th century - Carolingian and Ottonian Renaissance
  • 7) 11th century - the beginnings of flowering of medieval Latin literature
