Course objectives
Upon completion of this course, student will have a general knowledge of the history of the ancient civilizations (the Near East, Minoan and Mycaenean civilization in much more detail, ancient Greece as far as to Hellenism). He will be able to: compare the civilizations of the Near East with the Greek poleis; describe various political systems and institutions of ancient Greece and compare them with modern political and social institutions; explain the importance of Greek culture for the modern Europe
Syllabus
  • 1) Introduction to Mediterranean Studies.
  • 2) Main features of state system, society, economy, religion and culture in the kingdoms of Near East.
  • 3) Origins of the Antiquity in Europe.
  • 4) Origins of the ancient civilization.
  • 5) So-called Dark Ages of the Greek history; the progressive processes within Greek society.
  • 6) Development of Sparta during the Archaic period.
  • 7) Development of Athens during the Archaic period.
  • 8) Athens in the Classical period.
  • 9) Various Greek associations and common institutions.
  • 10) Crisis of poleis and its causes.
  • 11) Epoch of so-called transitive hegemonies in particular poleis and the supremacy of Macedonia.
  • 12) Hellenism, its importance for science and culture.
  • 13) Heritage of ancient Greece in the contemporary world.
