- Course objectives
- The aim of the seminar is to introduce scholarly study of folk fairy-tales, using the example of Greek folk literature. On the basis of lectures and reading, students will become familiar with the specifics of Greek fairy-tales; they will be capable of independent work with catalogues of fairy-tale types and other scholarly literature. Students will understand the folk fairy-tale in a wider context (philology, but also folklore studies, dialectology and psychology). Students will get to know basic theoretical resources for studying fairy-tales and they will be capable of applying them to Greek folk literature.

- Definition of the genre, history of interest in fairy-tales.
- Theory of emergence of fairy-tale, classification of fairy-tales and their structure, methods of analysis.
- Study of fairy-tale in Greece, scholars, significant books of fairy-tales.
- Fairy-tale characters, characteristics of narrative style.
- Specific features of Greek fairy-tales – characters, plots, formal features.
- Problems of translation.
- Readings and translation of texts in original.
