- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to provide a survey of the development of literature of the South Slavonic Orthodox nations since the beginnings of the Slavonic written culture to the national revival. Introduction to the culture of the Middle Ages and traditions of the Orthodox Church is provided. The seminar is based on the intensive home reading and the analysis of relevant texts. On successful completion of the course student will acquire knowledge of several epochs of the development of literature of the South Slavonic Orthodox nations and he will deepen his skill to analyse and interpret a literary text.

- . Introduction to the culture of the Middle Ages. 2. Mission of Sts. Cyril and Methodius and fundaments of the Slavonic literature. 3. Literary schools of Preslav and Ochrid. 4. Old Church Slavonic and the oldest Glagolithic and Cyrillic scripts. 5. Bogomilian heresy in literature. 6. St. Sava and the beginnings of the Serbian literature, Serbian hagiographic tradition. 7. Hesychasm, literary school of Trnovo. 8. Kosovo literary cycle. 9. Christian authors at the onset of the Ottoman rule. 10. Literature and cultural life under the Ottoman rule until the beginning of the 18th century. 11. Literature and cultural influences in the 18th century. 12. National revival.

- Prerequisites for granting the credit: regular attendance (maximum of 3 absences during a semester) and thorough home preparation on weekly basis, participation in class discussion, handing in an essay. Final exam has a form of a written test.
