Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide a survey of the development of the older literature of Bulgarians, Macedonians, Montenegrins and Serbs since the beginnings of the Slavonic written culture to the beginning of the 19th century. The literary development is examined in the domestic as well as European historical and cultural context. Therefore, a basic outline of Croatian and Slovenian literature of Renaissance, Baroque and Enlightenment is also presented to students. The seminar is based on the intensive home reading and the analysis of relevant texts. On successful completion of the course student will acquire knowledge of several epochs of the development of literature in the Slavonic South and he will deepen his skill to analyse and interpret a literary text.

  • 1) Beginnings of the Slavonic Written Culture, Great Moravian and Ohrid literary schools; 2) Croatian Literature of the Middle Ages, Literature on the Territory of Macedonia in the Middle Ages and the Early New Age; 3) Bulgarian and Slovenian Literature of the Middle Ages; 4) Serbian Literature of the Middle Ages; 5) Croatian Renaissance Literature; 6) Serbian Literature of the Early Modern Age; 7) Bulgarian Literature of the Middle Ages II; 8) Bulgarian Literature of the Early Modern Age; 9) Serbian Baroque, Enlightenment, Sentimentalism and Classicism; 10) Bulgarian and Slovenian Englightenment and the Beginnings of Romanticism; 11) Literature of the Territory of Croatia, Dalmatia, Dubrovnik Republic and Bosnia in the Baroque and Enlightenment Era.

Assessment methods
Prerequisites for granting the credit: regular attendance (maximum of 3 absences during a semester) and thorough home preparation on weekly basis, participation in class discussion. Final exam has a form of a written test.
