Course objectives
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
understand and explain the basic Latin morphology;
use their knowledge of normative grammar;
create simple sentences in Latin;
identify unknown syntactic phenomena based on the acquired knowledge.
Syllabus
  • Basic morphological and syntactic phenomena of the normative grammar.
  • Morphology: 1st-5th declension of nouns;
  • 1st-4th conjugation of verbs: indicative of the present, imperfect, and future tenses in active and passive voices;
  • adjectives;
  • basic forms of personal and possessive pronouns;
  • adverbs.
  • Syntax: constructions with two accusatives or nominatives; a subject accusative+infinitive;
  • independent uses of the subjunctive mood;
  • time clauses with CUM HISTORICUM;
  • UT clauses.

Teaching methods
Seminars (grammar exercises, translating), 1,5 hours per week. Active class attendance and homework are required.
Assessment methods
Requirements for credit: regular class attendance (75%) and two written tests - one during the semester, final one during the examination period (passing score 65%)
